The pharmaceutical company Esteve has completed the relocation of its factory in China and has taken the opportunity to expand its industrial capacity there in the business of manufacturing active ingredients for third parties. Esteve has three factories and a chemical research center in Catalonia, and also has a factory in Mexico and one in China, but was forced to move the latter to a new location because the Chinese government wanted to develop a residential area where it was originally located. Initially, the company estimated an investment of 50 million dollars for the relocation, but ultimately it amounted to 4 billion dollars (71 million euros at the current exchange rate). The new plant, located in Shaoxing, is digitized and larger than the original, with the ability to grow even more. Esteve Laboratories has two main businesses: the manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients for third parties (CDMO, in English), and the purely pharmaceutical business, developing products for highly specialized therapies. Between the two businesses, Esteve achieved revenues of 828 million euros in 2025, an 11% increase from the previous year. The pharmaceutical division contributed 344 million to revenue (with a growth of 15%), and the CDMO division contributed 483 million (an increase of 9.1%). In a statement on Wednesday, Esteve explains that the CDMO business is strengthened by the new plant in China, as it increases its industrial capacity, which «significantly expands the manufacturing capabilities» of the company in Asia, with increased productivity, advanced technologies, and the flexibility needed for future growth.
