Javier Ambrossi y Javier Calvo reconocen estar sorprendidos. Casi nada.
Ambrossi and Calvo claim the universality of The Black Ball in their unstoppable career towards the Oscar.
Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo admit to being surprised. They are achieving what seemed like a difficult task a few months ago: exciting half the world with a movie that is «Spanish» through and through, «written by two gays, directed by two gays, about the gay experience and with three gay actors playing gay characters, that is working at the box office», as Ambrossi explained on Monday at a press conference in Los Angeles. In truth, it’s much more than that. The black ball is devastating. In Spain, it is already the most box office hit of the year, with 30 million euros earned, and in the United States, it is considered the main contender to dethrone Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey in the race for the best picture Oscar. Almost nothing… All of that after signing a first weekend in American theaters that left $277,500 in only four New York and Los Angeles cinemas, at an average of $69,375 per theater. «There’s no need to change a queer story to reach an audience,» reasoned Ambrossi. And it seems that time has proven them right.
